Summer Getaway! 10 Things to Do in Canmore During the Summers

With gorgeous, larger-than-life Rocky Mountain scenery and an abundance of outdoor activities, Canmore is the ultimate destination for a summer retreat. Whether you're seeking white-knuckle adventures, an idyllic escape from the everyday hustle and bustle, or something in between, you'll find it in this postcard-perfect mountain town.

We've previously featured some of the best things to do in Canmore in the summer, but here, we're highlighting 10 more warm-weather activities to add to your bucket list.

1. Paddle the Waters Around Town

It's no secret that the Bow Valley's sparkling waterways are hubs for some of the best things to do in Canmore. Experience them from a unique perspective by cruising around on a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) or kayak for a few hours. Solara resort guests get free SUP rentals, part of our Stay® | Well amenities. If you prefer to take lessons or book a guided tour, head over to Bow Valley SUP & Surf

2. Summit the Iconic Three Sisters

You can't go anywhere in town without noticing the majestic Three Sisters, the three towering peaks that dominate Canmore's skyline. While many sightseeing trails afford closer views and unique angles, one of the best summer activities in Canmore is hiking to the summit—or one of them, anyway. Hikers can tackle Big Sister and Middle Sister in one long, moderately challenging day each, while only experienced alpine climbers should attempt Little Sister.

3. Go Rafting

Whether you opt for an adrenaline-inducing whitewater tour or a scenic float, one of the best things to do in Canmore during the summer is to navigate a river in the middle of the Rocky Mountains. Both Canadian Rockies Rafting and Canmore Raft Tours offer a variety of options, with some excursions departing right from downtown. Even if you have just one hour or so to spare, you can squeeze in this exciting family fun in Canmore.

4. Hit the greens

Canmore's alpine golf courses provide unmatched scenery, not to mention challenges. This summer, try one of the three exceptional courses right in town: Stewart Creek Golf & Country Club, Canmore Golf and Curling Club, or Silvertip Golf Course. There are also a few others within a short, scenic drive—including the renowned Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course.

5. Go Fishing

Year-round, one of the most popular Canmore activities for outdoor enthusiasts is fishing. However, there's something magical about casting a line into cold, crystal-clear mountain waters in the summer. Whether you prefer fly-fishing or a traditional rod and reel, our mountain town offers plenty of opportunities to hook rainbow and brown trout, as well as arctic grayling. If you're just visiting, we highly recommend hiring an experienced guide to put you on some trophy fish. For anglers who prefer a DIY approach, head to Quarry Lake or Grotto Mountain Pond, which is stocked in the summer.

6. Canmore Mountain Market

The end of May signifies the official start of 'market season,' a beloved Canmore summer tradition for over 25 years. Over at Elevation Place (another one of the best things to do in town!), the Canmore Mountain Market takes place every Thursday from the third week of May through early October. Sample fresh local produce, baked goods, meat, coffee, and tea, alongside artisan products including jewelry, home decor, soap, tinctures, and more.

7. Disc Golf at Canmore Nordic Centre

For a different type of golf, challenge your travel partners to a round of disc golf at the Canmore Nordic Centre. Set against the backdrop of the Rockies, this scenic 18-hole course offers outdoor family fun in Canmore for all skill levels.

8. Canmore Folk Music Festival

Held over the Heritage Day long weekend in August, the annual Canmore Folk Music Festival is one of Alberta's most anticipated summer activities. The festival features talented musicians from around the world, but also hosts storytelling events and an immersive kids' area.

9. Tour a Local Distillery

One of the best things to do in Canmore, especially on a hot summer day? Savour the taste of locally crafted spirits at Wild Life Distillery. Pop into the tasting room for a cocktail or sample, or book a weekend distillery tour at the production facility, which includes spirits tasting, a souvenir glass, and a canned cocktail. Solara Resort & Spa guests enjoy an exclusive 20% discount on tours and tastings when they call 403-678-2800 to book.

10. Summit Ha Ling Peak

Summertime is the ideal season to hike up to the summit of Ha Ling Peak, another iconic peak perfectly framing Canmore. While the 6-kilometer (3.7-mile) trek is far from easy, Ha Ling's craggy silhouette looks far more intimidating than it actually is. And with recent trail upgrades, the hike is even more accessible. Especially adventurous souls can conquer the Canmore Triple Crown, hiking three major mountains in one day.
